Well, usually I scan a big number like that and take note of its order of magnitude (2 billion in this case), and go back to other decimal places only if needed.
It's sort of like when I go shopping. I keep the approximate running total (to the nearest dollar, say) in my head as I put items in the cart, to make sure the cashier does not made a large error at check-out.
O'Tink, prolly I typically do something similar...perhaps rendering a number like this into 2 1/4 billion, or maybe 2 1/3 billion...just for purposes of usability...
