I think some memories fade, but I have others from my early childhood that are still very vivid.

But even the memories that fade from consciousness can sometimes be brought up by hypnosis, so yes, I think they are stored somewhere.

They fall into a giant crevasse

Is the crevasse virtual, spiritual or physical? If physical, wouldn't that require a "bobblehead"?

They're all in there somewhere but unless we occasionally bring them to the fore they usually stay hidden. I can still remember things from the late 1930s early 1940s and I was very young at the time. Little things that never went away.

On the other hand, if I hadn't been watching the semi-finals of the Australian Open today I wouldn't have even remembered that it was Thursday.

Traumatic memories stay.  There are some pleasant memories that stay.  I think most go away as we age but will somehow come back if some TV show of yesteryear is shown or a newsreel is presented.

They are there. Sometimes it's takes more to bring them up.

Long ago seems very clear and sometimes I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday

i think that depends on the brilliance of the event.  Were I to reflect recently I'd find the colors quite brilliant.
