I like a lot women authors: Flannery O'Connor, Alice Hoffman, Toni Morrison. Also I like authors that write in the genre of magical realism: Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I think Kafka kind of falls into this category sometimes. Also, playwrights and authors that fall into Absurdist literature: Harold Pinter and Kafka.
Looking up Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I found a website in which they feature 10 free-to-read short stories of his. The first short story I read of his I did not care for, but I was much younger and had too many unbending beliefs. It was "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings." I have a much greater appreciation for this story now that I am older and it is one of my favorites.
Flannery O'Connor is intense. I wasn't sure if I could get through her short story "The Misfit." I really like both Garcia Marquez and Kafka too. I don't have much experience with some of the others you mention, which is a criminal oversight on my part. One of my greatest professors is an expert on Morrison.
J. K. Rowling, Orson Scott Card, Isaac Asimov, J. R. R. Tolkien, Philip Pullman
Jaqueline Wilson, Dan Höjer and Charlie Higson.
Of Jaqueline Wilson I lie her book series girls the most and from Dan Höjer his Swedish ghost stories and from Charlie Higson his zombie books.
I like Darcie Chan and Stephen King.

I read all the time, so my favorites change.
I can tell you about a book that's blowing my mind right now. I love it.
The Night Land by William Hope Hodgson.
How did I not know about this book?!?!
Jim Butcher, Stephen King, Douglas Adams, and Jean Auel.
