It isn't that anyone is worthy or unworthy of my respect, it's that some do things which make it impossible for me to trust them, much less think highly of them. I am incapable of truly respecting anyone who is duplicitous, insincere, constantly feigns victimization or refuses to take ownership of their actions / decisions.
Frankly, I'd rather keep company with a complete and unapologetic dick who knows they're a dick and owns it than someone who's surreptitiously catty and feigns ignorance to it.
But it has nothing to do with value as a being, I simply don't value you those attributes.
Respect is a two way street, so, if a person respects me, I will do the same.
Someone who listen to me for instance.
Integrity. Honesty. Compassion. Objectivity. Moral or philosophical consistency.
Please note that I don't necessarily have to like someone to respect them (I've known many whom I loathed, but respected), but I generally do.
Quite literally, consistently behaving in a respectable manner when and where it is necessary.
When I meet someone like that, they've met their match.
