It wasn't a gift I could open. It was when my husband and I, without even talking about it, just began not giving each other gifts on special occassions. We would spend our holidays just enjoying each other's company, talking, doing things we enjoyed together and just hanging out.
When we did give each other gifts, it was spontaneous, because we had discovered something we knew was perfect for the other, or just wished to make an ordinary day special. A lot of people thought our way strange, but we had the best part of holidays - being together - and had special days sprinkled throughout the year as well.
