Was Ravana a Tamil or Sinhalese king?

Question

The epic Ramayana says that Ravana is from Sri Lanka but both the Sinhalese and Tamils lives in the country. So Ravana was a Tamil king or Sinhala king? Does people of Sri Lanka consider Ravana as good or evil? Can you please enlighten me on this subject?

If you consider the Indian version then Ravana is a Tamil king since it describes him as the worshiper of Lord Shiva but if you consider the Chinese version of Ramayana then he is a Sinhala king since it stated Ravana as a Buddhist king.

I don't know whether Ravana is worshiped in Sri Lanka or not but I heard Gond people of India who are Dravidians worship Ravana and calling Ravana as their King and Gond as their religion.
