We formally got rid of the death penalty in Norway in 1979. It had not been in use for generations at that time, with some exceptions in the late 40s.
There was some spring cleaning to be done after the war.
Further back in our history there was many cleverly thought out ways to torture and execute prisoners, particularly during the Viking age, but also long after.
