I'm not an Olympics guy but I do understand that this event is very popular.  Everyday the Olympics was on the news.  The event comes to a close today.

I liked the athletes, as I always do, but the venue stunk (literally, I would guess, with all the water pollution). I suspect Brazil lined a lot of corrupt pockets to have the Olympics staged there.

First time in years that I've been home to watch any of them but I agree about Rio. It's a big facade to cover up all of the slums. Shame.

Brazil, like many other Latin American countries, is comprised of a small, rich, governing oligarchy and a very large poor population dependent on government for subsistence, and that's just the way the oligarchs like it, because the dependent poor population gives them a voting majority.

Unfortunately, that's exactly the direction we're moving in here in the US, with the Clintons, Gores, Obamas, Kennedys, etc playing the role of the rich oligarchs, as the middle class shrinks.

Very true ! The Oligarchs pretty much run Russia now and Putin is their boy!

  • Rich country = more medals, top of the list.
  • Developing countries = less medals, down of the list.
