I have desert landscaping but crabgrass will pop up from time to time.

What lawn ? I just have a front area with bark and statues for a front yard. I'll pass on the lawn stuff.

Crab grass is mostly adapted to arid regions and poorly drained, underfertilised soils, some species serve also as food (fonio) or animal fodder:

A bit of it.

No, we have mostly pachysandra and ivy for a lawn.

The crabgrass doesn't have a chance.  :)
