In the year 1966, British forcibly removed all native people from the islands of British Indian Ocean Territory. Later in 1971, the UK signed a treaty with the US which grands the US to use the islands for US military operations for next 50 years.
The lease expired recently, but has been renewed by London until December 20, 2036. These islands are important for USA & UK to monitor the Indian ocean and South Asia since there are no military base in Indian ocean.
Mauritius Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth has threatened to take Britain to the International Court of Justice to resolve the dispute over the sovereignty of Chagos islands after securing a vote in the UN General Assembly on the issue. The UK has stated that it will return the islands to Mauritius when it is no longer required defence purposes.

How many native islanders who want to go back are involved?
As for the UN, Britain and/or the US could always veto a Security Council resolution on the matter.
And I suspect the Mauritius Prime Minister could always be persuaded to see things Britain's way if the price is right, which is probably what this flap is mostly about. Forgive me if I'm being too cynical.
