I assume Singh is the one with the ugly, shaggy black beard and the hairy arms.

Not my type.  :O  And it's about time they locked that rapist up, 15 years after the fact.

I prefer a more intellectual man. :ermm:

Sadly enough, there were and still are many false Gurus - as much as fake prophets:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guru

Citing:

The teacher is one who is endowed with the power of furnishing arguments pro and con, of understanding questions [of the student], and remembers them. The teacher possesses tranquility, self-control, compassion and a desire to help others, who is versed in the Śruti texts (Vedas, Upanishads), and unattached to pleasures here and hereafter, knows the subject and is established in that knowledge. He is never a transgressor of the rules of conduct, devoid of weaknesses such as ostentation, pride, deceit, cunning, jugglery, jealousy, falsehood, egotism and attachment. The teacher's sole aim is to help others and a desire to impart the knowledge.

— Adi Shankara, Upadesha Sahasri 1.6 [48]

and:

Swami Vivekananda said that there are many incompetent gurus, and that a true guru should understand the spirit of the scriptures, have a pure character and be free from sin, and should be selfless, without desire for money and fame.[78][full citation needed]

The few gurus that I have heard of are famous ones that certainly have made a lot of money, sometimes under very questionable circumstances. :ermm:

But my experience with gurus is very limited, so I really have no basis for forming an opinion of the less well-known ones. There probably are many sincere and humble ones, unlike the flamboyant celebrity types.

by

Yes, indeed, there are many humble ones, they teach moderation and spiritual opening, and they don't advertise. These are the true ones.

Like in real life: quantity cannot replace quality.

I am afraid that things are even getting worse, because such extremely abusive, sexist mentalities are deep rooted, new laws cannot change such attitudes, if they cannot be enforced systematically and treat crimes as crimes - and that begins with an appropriate education and a thorough change of attitudes:

Hi Dan,

I have loved the great spiritual traditions of India...even so far as reading several times Paramahansa Yogananda's translation of the Bhagavad Gita...

I have read that the word guru translates as 'dispeller of darkness,' and that if someone claims to be a guru, that is virtually a sure sign that they are not! Those trailers do not impress me very much...

Also, the name SINGH suggests he is from the Sikh tradition? How is he regarded there?

@ Virginia,

There are plenty of religious exploiters here in the US too.  :ermm:

No, O'Tink! Say it ain't so, O'Tink, say it ain't so...:O

Lol - Virginia and T(h)ink!

Add the whole world: charlatans and false prophets are widespread ...

Christians here heal Blind, Deaf in the stage.

Hi Dan, I watched both videos and found them very interesting; I did not realize Christian healers were ministering in India! Here in the US, the healing ministries are often Christian Pentecostal denomination. One such minister was Oral Roberts (1918-2009), he was very famous and he did help my great uncle very much. Do you know if the Christian healers in India are Pentecostal?

I found this photo of Oral Roberts.

That's remarkable, Virginia.  I've seen faith healers on TV, but had my doubts.  I've never met anyone with close knowledge of faith healing.  If I may ask, what did Oral Roberts help your great uncle with?

by

Tink, it was something about my uncle's arm...again, I was fairly young and not really questioning, just took everything for granted then...

However, this was something like arthritis, perhaps related to a war wound, and had been intractable for the medicine of the day. The healing was quite a phenomenon in our family, because we are inherently grounded in common sense and skepticism. What I do remember, and did not mention in the response to Dan, is that after three or four years the problem began to return in my uncle's arm. If I recall correctly, it never did get as severe as before the healing, but still the healing was not fully permanent. However, he did enjoy those few years of complete remission.

This uncle was a very interesting person, btw, a WWI veteran where he was the chauffeur for General Pershing!

Anyway, that event in my own family did open my mind. I still carry a healthy skepticism as these things do tend to be fraudulent, but at the same time I have also seen and experienced many remarkable happenings since this event with my uncle.

by

I don't think they are healing people. The arrange people to act for the sake of converting people. If they are real, there won't be any hospitals.

by

@ Virginia,

Wow, now I know someone who knew someone who knew General Pershing!   And not even six degrees of separation:)

by

Yes, you are definitely in some highly exclusive company, here on SOLVED, O'Tink!

And Dan I think by and large, 99.99%, your evaluation of acting for the sake of gathering converts would be accurate I think!

by

Yes, Dan, we hear about lots of miracles in every religion, and such practices are very ancient. Sadly enough, most of these miracles were and are fake, but certain medicines (plants, food) and therapies (massage, baths, etc.) were also discovered, often since long ago, and some are still useful, provided that medical prescription and the correct doses are observed. And the curing of diseases and injuries also depends on the individual patients, their capacities, their situation, their "inner strength", etc.

But:

some alternatives, which may be combined with modern medicine, according to your doctor's advice

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrotherapy

etc.

Miracle healings remind also of the "underworld" in history:

And sometimes, miracles - or lucky combinations of circumstances - can happen.
