I loved her even for the 30-odd years I was atheist, she is just SO cool lady! She used to hang out with her buddy, St. John of the Cross...both of them ducking and dodging the Spanish Inquisition (with various success). They would sit on hard chairs in deep spiritual discussion...levitating all unawares, chairs and all...

Anyway here is her poem, for true believers and atheists too...followed by one from St. John, who even today is known as perhaps the greatest poet Spain has ever produced...

Christ has no body now but yours.

No hands, no feet on earth but yours.

Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world.

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.

Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

* * *...and then St. John's poem...

Oh you guiding night!

            Oh night more kindly than the dawn…

            Oh you night that united

            Lover with beloved,

            the beloved in the Lover

            transformed!

I also forgot about the Day for Saint Teresa of Avila - yes, she was exceptional:

Thank you, Virginia, for reminding me.
