Europe was a wildfire ready to burn in those years. The Serbian assassin just gave them an excuse to see who was the bigger and better of the Empires.

My old laptop can no longer open Pinterest, Kninjanin.

My impression is as Rooster mentions; that part of Europe was already very volatile, and the assassination set off a chain reaction.
