@TheOtherTink, And they used mercury to treat Syphilis. Mercury itself is harmful. Radium is also used as a medicine before. There were people who were affected by radium and were classified with Syphilis. (Graphical content)
@ Dan: Yes, these were awful examples of the effects of quack medicine.
At 1:37 of the first clip, you could even get radium chocolates, biscuits and cocoa!
And then of course you could use radium toothpaste to make sure you didn't get any cavities in your teeth.
