Micah Garen/GettyResidents of Iceland’s Westman Islands are currently on “puffin patrol”, says The Atlantic. During August and September, locals roam the streets at night trying to find youngsters, fabulously called “pufflings”, who have got lost. Some of the baby birds become confused during their first flight, which often happens in darkness, and fly towards city lights rather than the moonlight over the ocean, ending up stranded on dangerous city streets. Once they’re found, the puffling rescuers will take them back to either a beach or a cliff and release them into the sea.
