Plough Monday !
Yes indeed! A stout, sturdy, and gloriously muddy slice of rural tradition. Historically, this was the day that the Christmas festivities were packed away into a dusty loft and Britain’s farm labourers trudged back to the fields. But with no pay during the holidays, and pockets as empty as a scarecrow’s promise, the cash-strapped heroes paraded their ploughs through village streets, accompanied by music, dancing, rattling tins; lifting spirits and encouraging donations from the more comfortably cushioned folk.
