We grow our own tomatoes and eat a lot of salads, and the cherry tomatoes can grow well into the winter. But even for flavour they're lovely in a salad.
This year we grew acid-free yellow tomatoes (I dunno the name) and they come in two sizes: large and cherry. They're even nicer than my favourite Romas.
It just depends, they're good for different things. Cherry tomatoes are great in salads, but bigger tomatoes are good for making salsa and pasta sauce and stuff.
last year while buying plants for my garden, I bought something new......they were these sorta asymmetrical Italian cherry tomatoes in a hanging plant pot. They just draped over the sides of the planter, and you simply plucked them off. They grew like a big dog and were great.

They must be real red ripe tomatoes.
Cherry tomatoes are, usually, more tasty, but there are big tomatoes, which are excellent too. And for certain dishes, one needs big tomatoes.
