Donald Trump is a threat to the credibility of US politics.

I agree.  He might even be slightly worse than Obama in that regard.

Surely the GOP can come up with a more acceptable candidate, Tink? As it stands, Donald Trump is the best friend Hilary Clinton has. I'm sure lots of people will vote for her rather than face the prospect of Trump in 1600 PA and many others will fail to vote at all, which is almost as damaging for the Republicans.

@ Didge:   You are quite right that Trump has the least chance of beating Hillary as things now stand. The remaining four GOP candidates' chances of beating her are in inverse order to their current delegate count for the nomination.  Kasich leads Hillary by 7.4 points, Rubio leads by 5.0, Cruz leads by 1.5, and Trump trails by 3.4

(This is according to Politifact, which takes an average of 5 or 6 major polls)

But given how the votes are going, it's not clear that the GOP can prevent Trump from being their nominee. The next two weeks or so will probably tell.  If it should come to pass, it is because much of the GOP rank and file feels (rightly or wrongly) that the leadership has betrayed its trust, and because the leadership did not take Trump seriously enough early enough.

A most interesting article, Tink. Kasich may well be the best chance although, as the article states, it's probably too late now to stop Trump, which may mean another four years for the Democrats.

The strength of the democratic system is also its weakness. Everybody gets a vote but not all are equally astute and demagogues like Trump (or Hilary, for that matter) can sweep them away with rhetoric. All-in-all this promises to be one of the most interesting elections in recent years, but also potentially one of the most devastating. In a contest between Trump and Clinton it's possible that whoever wins, America will lose.
