I have an AT&T GoPhone and I love it.  There is no contract.  You pay for your minutes ahead of time.  It only costs me $25.00 every three months.

I used to use a cheep Tracfone because I'm not a 'talker'

Now I have a 'smartphone'...an Apple iPhone 5-S...$45.00 a month for service.
