what is the use of USB port in Tata Sky, Airtel, Videocon?

There is a usb port on the rear side of the Tata Sky, Airtel, Videocon digicom set top box but nothing happens when a pen drive or a external hard disk is connected. What is the actual use of this usb port? Is it possible to record live tv with it or can able to play video from a pen drive?

You can able to charge your smart phone by connecting it to the USB on the back side of the box.

Most likely it's for hooking it up to a harddrive or computer for recording or altering/updating  the firmware.
