Well I am not feeling humourous Sirfurryanimal, but kinda irritated...yes even in my tiny town of 1700, the supply lines to the grocery store got interrupted so several items supposed to be on sale, they were out-of-stock!

I saw also that in comparison to some other countries (like South Korea), the USA is not taking adequate steps to prepare because of too much profit motivation takes precedence, not enough concern for people's health. And, the virus is estimated to kill ten times deadlier than regular flu.

Well I see that both OtherTink and Hitman did give you verses, so ima rest on their laurels now! :)

Well, Taiwan and Singapore have done an excellent job of containing the virus, and they are not known for their aversion to profits. :)

Tink...yours is a straw man argument...give it another think... ;)

From that interesting link: "Now that Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top immunology official, has broken with the White House by acknowledging the severity of COVID-19 in a hearing before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, there’s perhaps more hope for collaboration and sharing of information. The New York Times reported, however, that the hearing soon devolved into a partisan feud over Trump’s response to the outbreak. "

Actually, I think Trump was somewhat ahead of the curve when he banned travel to China (which the Democrats predictably criticized at the time), and now he has banned travel to Europe (excluding the UK), which caused a 2000 point drop in the Dow-Jones average.

If he had tried to be as proactive as Taiwan and Singapore (assuming that our health bureaucracy was even ready, which it was not), there would have been shrill cries from Schumer and Pelosi that Trump was trying to be a dictator, etc., etc.

The upshot is that Trump certainly seems to have done a better job than mainland China or Europe, but not as good a job as Taiwan or Singapore for reasons stated.

One of my big concerns with items/crises like this is to try to reduce them to the fault of individual personalities...and then the logical fallacy (too simplistic), all we need to do is 'get rid' of the offenders. I also post on Quora, for example, full of avid Democrats who think we just need to get rid of Trump, problem solved. (Idea...someday ima sic you The Dark Tink and your limericks on 'em all!)

Nope ... the weaknesses are systemic. Trying to focus on internal, individual dynamics gets us nowhere, placing blame just digs us deeper. My own attempts to get past all that, i.e. see the bigger picture, I come up with the possibility that our economy is so weak and precarious anyway from the huge bubbles, that we are excessively vulnerable.

A rational, democratic government would have understood long ago from SARS, if not WWI Spanish flu + the capriciousness of Saudi Arabia/OPEC as well as many other vulnerabilities, and structured the US economy on firmer foundations. And, would have made advance (even if non-profitable) preparations for obvious threats such as pandemics.

The way forward now? THAT is difficult, I don't have the expertise to be specific. But I think good first steps do exist, and there are people with that depth of understanding...so far USA gov't has not shown its competence though. not yet.
