"The House of the Rising Sun" is a traditional folk song, sometimes called "Rising Sun Blues". It tells of a person's life gone wrong in the city of New Orleans; many versions also urge a sibling or parents and children to avoid the same fate. The most successful commercial version, recorded in 1964 by British rock group The Animals, was a number one hit on the UK Singles Chart and also in the United States and France.[1] As a traditional folk song recorded by an electric rock band, it has been described as the "first folk rock hit"

SFA, I especially liked the first version, from 1933. The song is older than I realized! I first heard it in 1963, in the timber town of Aberdeen in SW Washington State.

Aberdeen, at 18,000 souls, was the largest city around then and coffee houses were popular, so someone started a coffee house in Aberdeen! The lyrics were considered quite daring then...doubtless why I still remember when and where I first heard it. :)
