As you will see from the modern pictures most of what you are looking at has gone...

The modern photo looks in the opposite direction

imageWhere there was once a railway there is a modern road system and even that bus station has been replaced.

There is the wave sculpture and that big building is The Riverfront theatre.Next to it is the Old Moderator Wharf building -in the old picture-and it is (was?) a restaurant.

All the other old buildings long gone and there is a modern shopping centre at the Southern end of the old picture.

The southern end of the old picture..that prominent building is the Newport Centre..opened in 1985-Elton John played there-and is due for demolition and replacement

And Friars Walk shopping in the bottom right of the old picture-so named because a monastery once stood in the vicinity

Newport Centre opened 1985 -- they are going to demolish a building only 36 years old? Somebody is bored, just needing something to do...

Yes....in fairness it is not exactly state of the art by modern standards. It was in 1986....

I have only been in  it to watch snooker tournaments in seats designed for midgets...and to use the restaurant.

And it is being replaced by a bigger, better venue which will hopefully see acts prefer Newport over Cardiff.
