The phenomenon occurs when the lower stratosphere hits a chilly –81C, says My Modern Met. This turns water molecules into small ice crystals, which scatter the sun’s rays to produce striations of colours across the sky.

The ice crystals scatter the sunlight by refraction, but the different color components of the sunlight are refracted at slightly different angles (a process called dispersion), giving rise to the rainbow effect.
