Would You Accept Some Company?

Question

An officer, driving back home from tour, stranded on his way, after the motor of his car broke down.

It was already late in the night, and there were no hotels nearby.
He went to a house close to the site of his mishap and asked the only occupant of the house, a lady, to allow him to stay overnight.

After managing to convince her that he was a respectable person, he was allowed to stay for the night. During the chilly night, the lady, eager to make her visitor feel comfortable, kept coming to his room repeatedly, to bring a blanket, a hot water bottle, some tea, etc.

Once again, the lady knocked at the door of his room and asked
- "Would you accept some company?" -

The visitor could hardly believe how thoughtful the lady was and answered happily
- "Oh yes, please, that is so kind of you". -

The lady, relieved, replied:
- "Great! There's another person, who's stuck on the road with a broken down car".

Wait a minute!

Maybe the second motorist with a broken down car was also an attractive lady. The joke should tell us!

It could be - who knows, but the lady seemed to be a bit too mischievous - lol.

Perhaps mischievous, but also clever, because if the first guest had seen the second guest, he might not have been so eager to accept the "company".

So the joke is quite subtle, the implication being that the lady of the house is quite attractive, but that the second motorist is not, thus making the lady resort to her subterfuge.
