In films, even non-s*x*al n*d*ty is often slapped with an R rating, though there are exceptions, most notably TITANIC (rated PG-13).  In fact, it's so taboo that this site won't even let me spell out the word.  I should re-ask this question on another site that won't block out harmless words.  But, I want to ask it here first to get people's opinions to the question at hand.  So...why is this such a taboo subject?  Why does it make people uncomfortable?  Why are people offended by it?  Why do movies often (but not always) give harsh ratings when it is seen on-screen?

It is because of Google's policy. This site uses some Google products and recently Google has send 2 mails asking to remove few questions about n:udity.

I'd say what I think of Google's policy, but those words wouldn't be allowed to say on this site, either.  Just know I'm thinking of R rated words.

Google...Google... oh, yes, aren't they the search engine where you can look up the most depraved  p o r n  sites, if you are so inclined...?

Their policy must be close to the limit of hypocrisy.

Movie ratings are given by each country's movie ratings board.

They give ratings based on the general societal standards of that country.

The US is more sensitive to nudity and less about violence.

Many other countries of the world as just as touchy about violent content in films as the US's MPAA is about nudity.

I'd like to point out that not all nudity is the same.  The problem is most people (at least, in this country...United States) can't tell the difference between sex and nudity and often treat them as one of the same.  Same goes for the MPAA, which is why most films with nudity in them are usually rated R, regardless of what other content they contain.

If it were up to me, nudity without sex would be rated G while nudity with sex would keep its R rating, as usual.
