There is a common misconception that all Indians has more fertility rate than western countries. In fact, India will overtake China's population in around 4 years. But it's mainly from the Northern states. The southern states have lower fertility rate which is equal to some western countries.
-
France fertility rate = 2.1
-
Iceland fertility rate = 1.9
-
Ireland fertility rate = 1.9
-
Australia fertility rate = 1.8
-
USA fertility rate = 1.8
-
UK fertility rate = 1.8
-
Tamil Nadu fertility rate = 1.7
-
Kerala fertility rate = 1.6
Interesting, I would not have guessed this.
But if lots of young Indian women are heading south for marriage reasons, isn't it likely the fertility rate will increase soon?
And I learned a new word. 1 crore = 10 million.
Yes, indeed, the fertility rate has been dropping, while life expectany has risen - but India is still expected to have a bigger population than China in a few years.
