During the Dust Bowl, the Okies could only pass the California border check points if their "papers" included possession of $50 or more.

Lessee...Dust bowl years 1930-36...how much then was $50 in today's dollars? Inflation calculator says for 1933 it was worth $1000! And actually, I am guessing you could get further with $50 in 1933 than you could with $1000 now...

Not if you were buying electronic or electrical appliances. Ten dollars (= $200 currently) for a cheap radio, AM only. :O

Tink i checked on gasoline price in 1933, and there also you could do better now, at least for the present moment. Our price here in Tenino is currently $2.69, and the news claims the avg. price now is $2.10...

"In the year 1933, the average retail price of gas in the U.S. was $0.18. This is equivalent to $3.53 in 2020 dollars."
