Where's Rooster? he will want to weigh in on this one...I would not have gotten it -- but after I read HegeMarie answer, well Pilgrim you can see the way he holds his lip...
I just watched a well-done film starring Maureen O'Hara, and then went to Wikipedia to read again about the close friendship she shared with John Wayne...
Tink, does your source say where the photo was taken? I traveled to Winterset a few times in the five years I lived in Iowa, where he was born...they even have the house set aside as a memorial, now!
And even now, Winterset is a small, extremely pretty town, and rural too, far from any larger town -- like many towns in Iowa. Being raised in a small town myself (Washington State), I was almost surprised at how much I felt at home in the Iowa countryside.
Small towns much the same everywhere, I suppose. So I am wondering if this photo was taken in Winterset! He is standing in front of a wall of big stones, which do tend to inform Iowa architecture. They used what was available for building material, which meant stones more than timber. Winterset is the county seat, and the courthouse there is really quite lovely.
I do remember that a tornado hit Winterset while I was in Iowa; bad one too, took off a few roofs there...oh, and it turns out that Wikipedia has a photo of the Madison County courthouse, sits at the center of town, with the whole town built around it...here you go!
That's John Wayne.
I don’t think I’ve ever before seen a picture of the young him.
He had a LOOONG carreer.
The picture is from 1930.
He was only 22 or 23 in the picture (born in 1907).
He could have passed for a late teenager.
Yes, I could easily believe he was 19 or even 17 here.

I assume the picture was on the movies set of "The Big Trail," probably in Hollywood, but maybe on location someplace? Maybe Rooster knows.
Oh yes! I saw Rooster's post...he confirms The Big Trail...and love that shirt the very young John Wayne is wearing, too...
His first short matinee movie: The Big trail in 1930. That would have made him about 23 when that was taken
No wonder he and Marlene Dietrich had a six year long affair! LOL
Oh Rooster, that photo is just glorious...The Duke is certainly smitten here...loved it...
